GMAT中的变态题(1)

总有学生问我一些连我都回答不上来的问题。连我都回答不上来,这题应该算是真正意义上的变态了吧!

比如这道句子改错:

Darwin was not the first to advance a theory of evolution; his tremendous originality lay in the fact that he proposed the idea of natural selection as the means by which evolution worked.
(A) lay in the fact that he proposed the idea
(B) lay in the fact of his proposing the idea
(C) laid in the fact of his proposing the idea
(D) laid in his proposal
(E) lay in his proposal 

这题答案是E.

什么???那originality单数, lay岂不应该改成lays。
非也,这里的lay其实是lie的过去时。为什么?因为lie是不及物动词,lay(动词原形)是及物动词。由于lay既可以是及物动词lay的动词原形,也可以是不及物动词lie的过去时,所以E选项的lay,到底是哪一个表达,要根据它后面的成分决定。

因为我们知道,
及物动词后面必须有名词,后面没有名词的动词肯定是不及物。再看这道题,lay后面的in his proposal是介词,不是名词,所以lay只能是不及物动词lie的过去式。

如此说来,这题只能选E。又简洁又干爽。
